I love weddings. From the elegant champagne fountain ones where the bride and groom pull up to the Thomas Center or one of Gainesville's beautiful gardens in a horse and carriage, to the beer and barbecue ones out in the country that usually involve a lot of rock music and swimming--I love them all. I enjoy playing just the right music for the ceremony, stopping in a graceful mannner in just the right place and watching the exchange of vows; then playing swing and rock with the band for dancing at the reception; or folk and bluegrass for the outdoor natural Florida experience. I love being part of the experience, helping the bride and groom make choices, and adding to the ambience with the music they love. Maybe it's because my day job is playing at Shands hospital with Arts in Medicine--but I feel privileged to be able to share with people some of the most intimate and transformative moments of their lives. And, I've had some great fun playing at weddings. I've learned new songs for the first dance that got added to my permanent repertoire. I had my first ride on an airboat while playing at a wedding out in Cross Creek. I've played for barefoot brides at the beach, brides and grooms on horseback and in wetsuits. And I'll never forget the wedding we were playing out in the country where one of the dogs--a golden retriever, I think--got into a tug of war with the caterer over the groom's cake! I'll bet everyone here has some great stories about their favorite wedding experiences. Anyone else want to share? |
